Located in northeastern Fujian province, Ningde covers a land area of 13,452 square kilometers and a sea area of 44,600 sq km. By the end of 2025, Ningde's permanent resident population stood at 3.17 million.
It borders Wenzhou to the North, Fuzhou to the South, and Nanping to the West. Facing the East China Sea, Ningde boasts a coastline stretching 1,046 km.
The city is rich in marine resources and produces a wide variety of seafood, including large yellow croakers, shrimp, cockles, oysters, and seaweed.
Ningde is known for its pioneering efforts in poverty alleviation. It is also well-known for its numerous tourist attractions, such as Taimu Mountain, Baishuiyang Scenic Area, Yangjia Stream, and Yushan Island, as well as its various folk arts, particularly lion dances and paper-cutting.
In 2025, Ningde achieved a gross regional product (GRP) of 425.17 billion yuan ($62.6 billion), up 7.5 percent year-on-year. The added value of the city's primary, secondary, and tertiary industries totaled 43.04 billion yuan, 232.28 billion yuan, and 149.85 billion yuan, up 3.9 percent, 10.5 percent, and 3.6 percent from the previous year.
The city has four pillar industries: lithium batteries, new energy vehicles, stainless steel, and copper materials.
Ningde is home to one of the world's largest lithium-ion battery industry clusters and is recognized for its large industrial agglomeration of lithium-ion battery companies.
China's leading automotive battery maker Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL) is headquartered in the city. Founded in 2011, CATL has remained a global leader in power battery installations and energy storage battery shipments. Its products are sold to automakers worldwide, including BMW, Tesla, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, and Volvo.
The city is also a leading national hub for developing the new energy auto industry and a key model for clean energy. Based on these advantages, Ningde is committed to providing comprehensive solutions for clean energy generation, storage, and supply, as well as electrification applications.
The city plans to focus on building four bases, namely an important clean energy base along the southeast coast, the world's largest and most advanced energy storage industrial base, a demonstration base for integrated photovoltaic and energy storage development, and an exemplary base for electrified applications.
The development of Ningde is a success story of how targeted poverty alleviation has transformed local communities. The city has attracted visitors from around the world who come to learn about its poverty alleviation practices.
For example, people in Gutian county, Ningde, have gradually become prosperous thanks to the expansion of edible mushroom production. Gutian is now known nationwide as the "World Capital of Tremella". The industry plays a crucial role in local poverty alleviation and rural vitalization.
Xiadang, once a poverty-stricken township in Ningde city, has introduced advanced technology and new business models that integrate enterprises, cooperatives, and farming households in tea production. These efforts help ensure tea quality and raise farmers' incomes in the area.
Longtan village in Pingnan county, Ningde, was once a provincial-level village mired in poverty. Since May 2017, a project to develop the traditional village and its cultural and creative industries has been thriving by attracting talents, supporting the rural vitalization program, renovating old houses, and revitalizing the ancient villages.
