Sports, cultural events strengthen cross-Strait ties

A wide range of cross-Strait exchange activities have taken place in Fujian province this summer, bringing together young people, writers, artists, and Hakka communities from both sides of the Strait through sports competitions and cultural activities.

Sports have served as a significant platform for young people from both sides to connect. The 2026 Cross-Strait Youth Baseball Invitational & Carnival was held in Liancheng county from Aug 3 to 10, with 15 teams and 276 participants taking part. Since its launch in 2024, the tournament has welcomed nearly 300 young people from Taiwan in Fujian.

Volleyball and soccer have also taken center stage. The Fujian Cross-Strait Sports Carnival and the 9th Zhangzhou Cross-Strait Air Volleyball Invitational Tournament, held in Zhangzhou from Aug 7 to 11, brought together 20 teams and about 350 players. The second Cross-Strait Friendship Cup Youth Soccer Tournament kicked off in Shaxian county on Aug 14, drawing nearly 180 young people from Taiwan, who also joined an emergency response and fire safety camp and a food-themed cultural activity.

Literary programs have offered another avenue for interaction. A cross-Strait literature week in Xiamen from July 30 to Aug 3 featured more than 10 activities, while a poetry festival in Sanming, held from Aug 6 to 9, brought more than 70 poets to local lotus fields and Danxia landscapes, where they experienced Hakka culture.

Genealogy and Hakka cultural programs also continued. From Aug 18 to 21, more than 400 people from Taiwan gathered in Xiamen for Qixi Festival (Chinese Valentine's Day) activities, including a group wedding and visits focused on shared Fujian-Taiwan culture.
