Woodblock printing in Sibao town, Liancheng county, located in Longyan city, Fujian province, has a rich history dating back to the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279). It flourished during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and reached its peak in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). Sibao woodblock printing has been recognized as a national-level intangible cultural heritage representative item under the traditional craftsmanship category.
The craftsmanship consists of a meticulous six-step process. It begins with selecting and preparing the materials, followed by carving the woodblocks according to the desired content. During printing, paper is cut to size, and fixed onto a specialized printing table. The carved blocks are then used to print the text systematically before sorting, binding, and trimming the finished books.
Sibao is renowned as one of China's four major woodblock printing centers, and the only surviving site of its kind globally. It has preserved ancient bookshops, woodblocks, printing tools, and craftsmanship, serving as living fossils in the history of printing and publishing. It provides valuable insights into China's printing history, and publishing history, as well as the emergence and protection of copyrights.
However, the advent of modern movable-type printing technology has posed significant challenges to the inheritance of woodblock printing. Currently, only a dozen artisans in Sibao remain engaged in woodblock and printing, most of whom are elderly. After enduring centuries of trials and tribulations, some of the woodblocks, books, and printing tools related to the Hakka woodblock printing in western Fujian have suffered severe deterioration, threatening the preservation of this art form.
