Storytelling in Minnan dialect is popular in Xiamen and surrounding areas in Fujian province. It was included as a folk custom in the second batch of national-level intangible cultural heritage items.
Storytelling utilizes the rich vocabulary of the Minnan dialect, unique rhythms, proverbs, sayings, folk songs, and more to discuss the past and present in a lively and interesting manner. It gives listeners an understanding of the history, customs, and values of the Minnan region, making it highly appreciated by the local populace.
The props for storytelling are simple, and the performances are not limited by location. There is usually a makeshift "tea table" at the side of the stage, where some audience members enjoy tea while listening to the stories.
The performers generally have a certain degree of cultural education. In the past, they were mostly from declining aristocratic families or unemployed intellectuals. During the performance, they often sit on a specially designed high chair above the audience, sometimes even dancing and acting on a platform.
In ancient times, there was a distinction between "Wen Jiang" (literary storytelling) and "Wu Jiang" (martial storytelling). "Wen Jiang" was ideal for telling stories such as Liaozhai Zhiyi (Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio), Xi Xiang Ji (The Romance of West Chamber), and Dream of the Red Chamber, while "Wu Jiang" specialized in tales like All Men Are Brothers and Romance of the Three Kingdoms.
Storytelling in the Xiamen dialect is a vital part of Minnan culture and represents one of the most distinctive forms of dialectal oral literature. Widely popular in Xiamen, other Minnan regions, Taiwan, and parts of Southeast Asia, it boasts a rich history and a strong local character that continues to resonate with audiences.
