With over 15,000 Tulou buildings, including more than 1,300 large-scale structures, Nanjing is known as the "Tulou Kingdom". These ancient buildings, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008, embody the rich culture and history of the Chinese people.
Most of the buildings were built by the local Hakka people, giving rise to the name "Hakka Tulou" or "Hakka Buildings". "Tulou" in Chinese means buildings made of clay. From the names of the buildings alone, it can be determined that the main materials of the architecture are soil and wood. Stone and bamboo are also used to make the walls.
The Tianluokeng Tulou Cluster in Nanjing's Shuyang town features a square and three round Tulou buildings, including the unique oval-shaped Tulou. This site, modeled after the five elements of metal, wood, water, fire, and earth, is often described as a "world architectural wonder". From viewing platforms, the cluster resembles "Four Dishes and One Soup", making it a popular photo spot for tourists.
The Yuchang Building, famous for its tilted columns, has stood for seven centuries despite its seemingly precarious structure. Inside, visitors have the chance to experience its rustic charm and learn about the tea-growing livelihood of the residents.
The Hegui Building, known as the "No 1 Marvelous Building in the World", is known for its unique appearance and rich history. The well-preserved Huaicheng Building symbolizes lofty aspirations and showcases ancient wisdom in its design elements. Nanjing's Taxia village is home to a meandering stream which flows past 42 Tulou buildings and 11 distinct stone arch bridges.
