The Sino-US co-produced documentary Dear Kuliang, which tells the story of Kuliang from an international perspective premiered on Nov 7 in Los Angeles at the 21st Chinese American Film Festival and Chinese American TV Festival.
As the first documentary jointly produced by China and the United States about the Kuliang story, it follows American high school student Holly, a descendant of Kuliang's early residents, as she travels to China to trace her ancestors' footsteps.
Through a dual narrative that intertwines past and present, the film vividly depicts a century-long bond of friendship and shared memories rooted in Kuliang.
Eric Johnston, an American middle school teacher and researcher on Kuliang culture, noted that the Kuliang story – enduring for more than a century – testifies to profound and sincere connections that transcend cultures and borders.
Over the years, he has led his students on trips to Fujian province for cultural exchanges, field interviews, and historical research, aiming to help more young people from both countries learn about this shared heritage.
Guo Shaochun, Chinese consul general in Los Angeles, said that "Kuliang Bond" has become a touching symbol of mutual understanding and genuine friendship between the Chinese and American peoples.
He encouraged filmmakers from both countries to continue using creativity and insight to foster cooperation, share more inspiring stories with the world, and deepen mutual understanding and friendship between China and the USA.
